The Restroom Project

In the early stages of the pandemic, we faced a huge struggle. How could we reach survivors in lockdown with their abusers? How could they safely call us when their abuser was just a few rooms, or steps, away?

The answer was simple: reach survivors through public restrooms in high-traffic areas: grocery stores, religious institutions, and cultural organizations. Narika’s community and volunteers began putting up flyers, translated in several languages, into restrooms throughout the Bay Area. The response has been both powerful and disturbing as many survivors reached out to us for help on their routine commutes to the grocery store, temple or park.

Since then, Narika has expanded this project to include libraries, nail and threading salons, malls, public parks, local businesses and more. Every week, Narika receives calls from survivors who found us through a flyer on a bathroom stall door.

It takes all of us to reach every survivor. Join our Restroom Project.

Step 1: Download and print the flyers below in the languages you think are most useful in your part of the Bay Area

Step 3: Place them in:

Grocery Stores (especially ethnic grocery stores)

Libraries

Public Restrooms

Religious Institutions (temples, mosques, churches, synagogues, gurdwaras, etc.)

Cultural Organizations/Centers

Nail Salons

Threading Salons

Hair Salons

Laundromats

Malls

We recommend that you ask the manager of the establishment for permission before placing them.
